2000 JAWS

“Women in Comparative Perspective: Japan and the U.S.”
Washington, DC (August 27-29)

In the summer of 2000, Dr. Karen O’Connor hosted the inaugural Comparative Politics Institute on Women and Politics at the Women and Politics Institute at American University. The program brought together seven women and politics scholars from the United States and five from Japan for a three-day workshop in which the participants exchanged research papers and developed new ideas for research collaboration. The goal of the project was to develop a network of women political scientists in Japan and the United States who would add a comparative perspective to the study of political behavior and institutions, and policymaking and implementation. The success of this event led to the official formation of the Japan-America Women Political Scientists Symposium (JAWS).

Following the workshop, participants’ revised papers were published in the June 2001 issue of PS: Political Science & Politics.
