2018 JAWS on “Gender and Democracy”
Boston, MA (August 28-31)

This 4-day professional development program for early-career women from the US and Japan was organized in partnership with the Rosenberg Institute for East Asian Studies at Suffolk University and held in conjunction with the APSA Annual Meeting in Boston, MA. Attending were 16 women who study related issues in Japanese Politics and American Politics at the intersection of gender, including facilitators Linda Hasunuma (University of Bridgeport), Mari Miura (Sophia University), Ki-Young Shin (Ochanomizu University) and Melissa Deckman (Washington College). The program included academic working sessions, research panels, guest lectures from local practitioners and/or policy makers, professional development sessions, and numerous networking opportunities (see schedule.pdf). Under the theme “Gender and Democracy,” attendees presented research on topics related to Women’s Political Activism and Behavior in the US and Japan, Transnational Women’s Solidarity Networks, Gender and Democracy in Comparative Perspective, and Gender Gaps in Representation, Campaigning, and Leadership.
