Marriott hotel during our upcoming Annual Meeting at the end of this month. On July 19, UNITE HERE Local 11 published an open letter regarding their ongoing labor action against a coalition of more than 40 hotels in the Los Angeles area. APSA has a long-standing policy of using unionized hotels for our events.

By August 1, APSA staff relocated all panels from the J.W. Marriott to the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC), which is not involved in the labor dispute. In addition, Interview Services are now located in the LACC. The presidential address is scheduled for the LACC. APSA will also facilitate panels and affiliated groups that wish to hold their events virtually. This enables our members to both attend the meetings and to support labor. As noted in the message sent to members on August 1, cancelling outright would cause near irreparable harm to the association, leading potentially to deep cuts in our programs and services provided to members. Moving the program entirely online is logistically not possible in such a short time and could entail even higher financial costs. We wish to thank the APSA staff for their extraordinary efforts to accommodate the more than 6000 members registered for the annual meeting.

APSA will also facilitate panels and affiliated groups that wish to hold their events virtually. We recognize that this action is seen by some as not adequately supportive of labor, but it honors the request to relocate in UNITE’s July 19 letter, while enabling our members to both attend the meetings and to support labor.

In a message to APSA members on August 2, UNITE HERE Local 11 wrote, “At the moment, it appears that APSA leadership is attempting to stand with workers by moving panels and events from the JW Marriott to the Convention Center. While we absolutely appreciate the intent of this act, we want to be clear that we are asking APSA to not hold ANY events at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live or other venues with a labor dispute.”

We want to be clear that we are in compliance with this request. We are holding all our events at the LACC, which does not have a labor dispute. In its August 2 message, the union also asks us to cancel other reserved hotel blocks, which we cannot do with less than one month before the meeting.

We ask APSA members to approach this difficult and urgent issue with an attitude of mutual respect and patience as we work through the challenges facing us. Thank you all for your understanding.

For the most up-to-date information the logistics of these moves out of the J.W.
