However, award winners do need to maintain active APSA membership for the duration of their grant.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary><strong><strong>I am an independent scholar or a faculty member working outside of a political science department, am I still eligible for research grants?<\/strong><\/strong><\/summary>\n<p>Yes!&nbsp;As long as&nbsp;your proposed research fits within the discipline of political science, and you meet other relevant eligibility requirements (see Question 1) you are eligible for research grants. Please note that PIs for Peer to Peer Pedagogical Partnerships and Special Projects Fund proposals should be political science faculty (or faculty outside of political science departments who regularly conduct research or teach in political science). They may also speak to the value of the proposed work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tips for Writing Grant Applications<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"tip-guide\">There are many guides to writing grant applications available online, through university writing centers, and research and grants offices. Your university&nbsp;may also offer peer feedback on grant application materials or workshops for improving grant applications. Below are some brief tips for preparing stronger grant applications, but we also recommend that scholars consult their departments and universities for more in-depth assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary><strong>General Tips<\/strong><\/summary>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Begin preparing materials early.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the application guidelines exactly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have questions about the review process or guidelines, ask! Contact the Centennial Center staff at <strong><a href=\"mailto:centennial@apsanet.org\">centennial@apsanet.org<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be explicit and specific \u2013 about your aims, methods,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/writingcenter.unc.edu\/tips-and-tools\/grant-proposals-or-give-me-the-money\/#example1\">budgetary needs<\/a>, the links between your work and the&nbsp;funds to which you are applying, and the value of your proposed work.&nbsp;Use statements such as, \u201cThe objective of this study\/project\/workshop is to \u2026\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be clear and direct in describing the connections between your research questions and objectives, your objectives and methods, your methods and results, and your results and your sub-field or the broader discipline. For non-research projects, be sure to link the aims of your project to your proposed methods, and your methods to your goals\/expected results, and your expected results to broader benefits for the discipline and\/or relevant community.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Devote additional time to composing and reviewing your proposal\u2019s first paragraph and first page \u2013 first impressions count in grant applications too!&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Predict the questions that the reviewer may have and answer them.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssrc.org\/publications\/view\/7A9CB4F4-815F-DE11-BD80-001CC477EC70\/\">Przeworski and Salomon (1995)<\/a>&nbsp;suggest that reviewers read with three questions in mind:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What are we going to learn as a result of the proposed project that we do not know now? (goals, aims, and outcomes). For non-research projects, what will we learn or what results will we produce (inclusion, professional development) that we don\u2019t have now or that we need?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why is it worth knowing? (significance). For non-research projects, why is this worth doing?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How will we know that the conclusions are valid? (criteria for success).
