The award, funded by Routledge\/Taylor &amp; Francis, is given every other year to books, journal articles or book chapters, in recognition of the late Professor Fujii\u2019s contributions to that area of inquiry.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The 2023 Lee Ann Fujii Award was awarded to Sarah E. Parkinson (Johns Hopkins University) for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/book\/9781501767142\/beyond-the-lines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Beyond the Lines: Social Networks and Palestinian Militant Organizations in Wartime Lebanon <\/em><\/a>(Cornell UP, 2023). Honorable mention in 2023 was extended to&nbsp;Farah Godrej (University of California, Riverside) for <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/book\/43156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Freedom Inside? Yoga and Meditation in the Carceral State<\/a>&nbsp;(Oxford UP, 2022). Alker Award recognizes&nbsp;the student conference paper that best employs or analyzes interpretive methodologies and methods for the study of politics.&nbsp;This award is named to honor the memory of Hayward R. Alker, former President of the International Studies Association and John A. McCone Chair in International Security at the School of International Relations, University of Southern California.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The 2023 Hayward R. Alker Best Student Paper Award was awarded to Be Stone, &#8220;The Gendered Meanings and Uses of Collective &#8216;Addictions&#8217; in U.S. Public Policy: A Case Study of the &#8216;Welfare Addict&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Group is&nbsp;<i style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight )\">now accepting nominations<\/i>&nbsp;for the 2024 Hayward R. Echoing Wislawa Szymborska&#8217;s &#8220;We call it a grain of sand,&#8221; the award underscores the centrality of meaning making in both the constitution and study of the political; drawing on William Blake&#8217;s &#8220;To see a world in a grain of sand,&#8221; the award honors the capacity of interpretive scholarship to embody and inspire imaginative theorizing, the intentional cultivation of new lines of sight through an expansion of literary and experiential resources, and the nourishing of a playfulness of mind so necessary to the vitality of social science.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The <strong style=\"font-size: revert;font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol'\">2023 Grain of Sand Award<\/strong> has been awarded to Timothy Mitchell, the William B. Ransford Professor of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies, Columbia University.As a trail blazer in the fields of political science and postcolonial theory, Mitchell\u2019s widely cited research has explored the place of colonialism in the making of modernity, the material and technical politics of the Middle East, and the role of economics and other forms of expert knowledge in the management and disciplining of collective life.
