Call for Nominations for Executive Committee (2018)

From the Chair:

The Religion and Politics Section of the APSA is pleased to announce a Call for Nominations for candidates to stand in an upcoming online election to serve a two-year term on the Executive Committee of the Religion and Politics Section. There are three vacancies on the Committee to be filled in this election.

Section members who wish to self-nominate as candidates should forward a short biography, including their institutional affiliation, to the Section Chair, Matthew Scherer, at mschere2@gmu.edu no later than August 10, 2018.

Nominees who do not self-nominate will be asked by the Chair to consent to having their name on the ballot. An online election held be held shortly after nominations close. According to APSA online elections are administered as follows:

1. APSA will send an email to all current section members with a message from the Chair that includes the names of the candidates, candidate bios, the number of positions open, the voting dates, and a link to the ballot.

2. The ballot typically gives the candidates’ names, and the option of choosing yes, no, or abstain.

3. When the voting period has concluded APSA will send a detailed report of the results to the Section Chair, who will convey the results via email to the section. I look forward to receiving your nominations.

Ted Jelen

Dear Religion and Politics Section Members,

Many of you may already have heard the sad news, but we wanted to let all section members know of the passing of Prof Ted Jelen. Prof Jelen was a giant of the field and a hugely influential and vibrant force in the APSA Religion and Politics section. His loss will be acutely felt by many of us. We will be sending flowers and condolences to the family on behalf of the section.

More will follow soon regarding plans to commemorate Prof Jelen’s life and contribution. If you have ideas or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact the exec.

Call for Nominations for 3 openings on Executive Committee

The Religion and Politics Section of the APSA is pleased to announce a Call for Nominations for candidates to stand in an upcoming election to serve a two-year term on the Executive Committee of the Religion and Politics section. Three vacancies will be filled in this election. Section members who wish to self-nominate as candidates should forward a one-paragraph biography, including their institutional affiliation, to the Section Chair at e.k.wilson@rug.nl no later than July 15, 2017.

Nominees who do not self-nominate will be asked by the Chair to consent to having their name on the ballot.

This Call for Nominations will close on July 15, 2017. The election will take place at the Annual Business Meeting held during the APSA Annual Convention in San Francisco on Thursday, August 31 2017, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Facility: Parc 55
Room:  Cyril Magnin III.

Members who are unable to attend the business meeting in person will be able to vote for nominees via an online ballot from 1 August until 5pm on 31 August. Details of the ballot will be announced following the closure of nominations.

From the Chair – New Awards?

Letter from the Chair:

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to bring your attention to the various awards the section is offering this year. We have a total of five(!) different awards that will be given out at this year's annual meeting. To find out more, or to nominate someone (including yourself!) for an award, just follow this link 2017 Awards and Committees.

As an exec committee, we have also been discussing introducing additional awards that recognise:

1. Emerging Scholars
2. Lifetime Achievement
3. Service to the Scholarly community, policy and society more broadly

We would love to hear your thoughts as a membership about this and also suggestions for the criteria for such awards and for people that the awards could be named after. We would especially like to name any new awards in honour of outstanding scholars who are women and/or people of color. Rather than reply all, can you please send any thoughts and suggestions directly to me as chair e.k.wilson@rug.nl

Annual Report 2016

"The APSA Religion and Politics Section brings together scholars interested in the study of the interrelations between religion and politics in local, national, regional and global contexts. As of September 14, 2016 the section has 255 regular members and 56 student members for a total of 311 members.

The outgoing section chair is Elizabeth Shakman Hurd. The incoming chair is Erin K. Wilson. The Executive Council is composed of Beth Hurd (2014-16), Erin Wilson (Chair-Elect, 2016-18), Jeremy Menchik (Secretary-Treasurer, 2014-16), Matthew Nelson (2014-16), Kevin R den Dulk (2015-17), Tarek Masoud (2015-17), and Elizabeth Oldmixon (2015-17). In 2016 Beth Hurd, Jeremy Menchik, and Matt Nelson rotate off, and Erin Wilson assumes the role of Chair. Our By-Laws mandate that the section will be governed by an Executive Committee of six section members, including three named offices: chair, chair-elect (in place every other year) and secretary-treasurer."
