Triggered by events like the 2008 financial meltdown and exacerbated by challenges such as climate change and pandemic response, as well as shifting dynamics of global power, the foundations of capitalist market society seem increasingly shaky. However, instead of addressing the legitimacy crisis among Western electorates, neoliberal elites have doubled down on financialization, pursuing strategies like quantitative easing and shadow banking, all while granting greater latitude to state forces for violent suppression and employing sophisticated forms of propaganda and social control.

No surprise then that new academic and political debates have begun, asking whether or not we might be moving into some kind of regressive ‘technofeudal’ mode of capitalism. Of course, the need for urgent attention to the question of possible economic and social alternatives to neoliberalism, if not capitalism itself, has been clear for a very long time. Yet opinions vary widely on what is to be done. Concerning the perils of global warming, for example, some on the left call for degrowth, or even postgrowth, while others continue to defend the idea that socialist strategy presupposes a commitment to growth and abundance. Equally, on the topic of automation and planning, some urge a politics of democratization and restraint, while others advance the ideal of a ‘fully automated’ socialism.

The lack of consensus on strategies and solutions reflects uncertainty about the nature of problem itself — are we transitioning towards a high-tech feudalism or still struggling within democratic capitalism?

#CCPS2025 is a space to explore these questions and related themes, including the need to defend basic rights and freedoms, and to articulate a positive progressive vision for political change. The conference organizers are seeking paper and panel proposals, including those in the following broad areas:

The End/ings of Global Democratic Capitalism?

Technofeudalism and the State; How Does Political Power Work Today?

Postcapitalism and Class Power

Automation, Planning and the Socialist Calculation Debate

Postcapitalism and Realignment; A New Geopolitics?

Race, Ethnicity, Gender & Sexuality; Identity in Postcapitalism

Growth, Postgrowth, or Degrowth?
