{"id":61,"date":"2015-08-30T15:21:47","date_gmt":"2015-08-30T15:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/web.apsanet.org\/s28\/?p=61"},"modified":"2017-07-25T14:27:42","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T14:27:42","slug":"2015-winners-of-political-psychology-section-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/connect.apsanet.org\/s28\/2015\/08\/30\/2015-winners-of-political-psychology-section-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"2015 Winners of Political Psychology Section Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The business meeting for the Political Psychology section will be held this year on Friday, September 4 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. (location to be announced).<\/p>\n<p>Please plan to attend and congratulate winners of this year\u2019s section awards.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hazel Gaudet Erskine Political Psychology Career Achievement Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Political Psychology section will award the first Hazel Gaudet Erskine Political Psychology Career Achievement Award at the 2015 annual meeting.\u00a0 This award was introduced at last year\u2019s business meeting as a way to recognize scholars whose lifetime scholarship and service to the profession has made an outstanding contribution to the field of political psychology.<\/p>\n<p>David O. Sears (University of California, Los Angeles) has been selected as the first to receive this recognition.\u00a0 Professor Sears has made innumerable contributions to the study of political psychology across many areas of research, from the psychology of racism, symbolic politics, and political socialization, among others.\u00a0 As one nomination letter puts it, \u201cProfessor Sears has forged a legacy from which all students of political psychology, present and future will always benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the award committee of Tali Mendelberg, Thomas Leeper, and Kathleen Searles for all of their service to this committee and the section.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert E. Lane Award<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>The Robert E. Lane Award is given by the Political Psychology section to recognize the best book in political psychology published in the past year.\u00a0 Congratulations to Christopher F. Karpowitz (Brigham Young University) and Tali Mendelberg (Princeton University) for being selected as this year\u2019s winners for their book, <em>The Silent Sex: Gender, Deliberation, and Institutions<\/em>, published by Princeton University Press.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the efforts of Laura Stoker, David Doherty, and Shana Gadarian for all of their excellent efforts in selecting a winner of the award.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Paper Award<br \/>\n<\/strong>Samara Klar (University of Arizona) was selected as winner of the section\u2019s Best Paper Award for her paper, \u201cWhen Common Identities Fuel Affective Polarization: An Experimental Study of Democratic and Republican Women.\u201d\u00a0 Congrats!<\/p>\n<p>Many thanks to Steven Greene, Rebecca J. Hannagan, Kyle Saunders, and Rune Slothuus for all of their time and service to this award committee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Dissertation Award<br \/>\n<\/strong>Congratulations to Timothy J. Ryan (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) for winning the section\u2019s Best Dissertation Award!<\/p>\n<p>His dissertation, \u201cNo Compromise: The Politics of Moral Conviction\u201d was selected from a slate of excellent submissions by the award committee of Stephen Nicholson, Eric Groenendyk, and Samara Klar.\u00a0 Great job, Tim, and thanks to the committee for all of their efforts!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distinguished Junior Scholars Award<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Five winners were selected to be recognized with Distinguished Junior Scholars Awards.\u00a0 This award is given to graduate students and junior scholars to help fund their travel to the APSA annual meeting.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winners are:<\/p>\n<p>Alexa Bankert\u00a0 (Stony Brook University)<br \/>\nNichole Bauer\u00a0 (University of Alabama)<br \/>\nChristopher J.
