The Qualitative and Multi-Method Research section presents several annual awards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our book, article, and conference paper awards all encompass two types of contributions: new research on methodology per se, i.e., studies that introduce specific methodological innovations or that synthesize and integrate methodological ideas in a way that is in itself a methodological contribution; and substantive work representing an exemplary application of qualitative methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Typically, award nominations are due in January. Nominations must<\/span><\/strong> be submitted using our nomination form, which will be provided here in fall 2026. To ensure that nominations are not lost or overlooked, please do not email nominations directly to award committee members. Use of our nomination form is required to ensure full consideration of all nominees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander L. George Article Award<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This award honors Alexander George\u2019s contributions to the comparative case-study method, including his work linking that method to a systematic concern with research design, and his contribution of developing the idea and the practice of process tracing. This award may be granted to a journal article or to a chapter in an edited volume that stands on its own as an article.  The George award will be given to works published in the calendar year prior to the year of the APSA meeting at which the award is presented, i.e. for the 2026 award to materials published in 2025. In determining the date of an article publication, authors may choose either the date the article was first electronically published or the date of the formal journal citation (but not both).  In determining the date of a book chapter publication, the copyright date of the book will establish the relevant year. Nominations must be submitted using the QMMR award nomination form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Collier Mid-Career Achievement Award<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This award honors David Collier\u2019s contributions \u2013 through his research, graduate teaching, and institution-building \u2013 as a founder of the qualitative and multi-method research movement in contemporary political science. The award is presented to a mid-career political scientist to recognize distinction in methodological publications, innovative application of qualitative and multi-method approaches in substantive research, and\/or institutional contributions to this area of methodology. To be eligible for the mid-career award, nominees must have defended their dissertation within fifteen years of the beginning of the year in which the award is presented. For the 2026 award, for example, nominees must have defended their dissertation in or later than 2011. Each nomination must include a cover letter summarizing specific merits of the candidate (not merely generic praise), as well as an up-to-date curriculum vitae of the nominee, including the date of the doctoral degree. Nominations must be submitted using the QMMR award nomination form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giovanni Sartori Book Award<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This award honors Giovanni Sartori\u2019s work on qualitative methods and concept formation, and especially his contribution to helping scholars think about problems of context as they refine concepts and apply them to new spatial and temporal settings. This award may be granted to a single-authored or multi-authored book, or to an edited volume. The Sartori award will be given to works published in the calendar year prior to the year of the APSA meeting at which the award is presented, i.e. for the 2026 award to materials published in 2025.  The copyright date of the book will establish the relevant year. One copy of the nominated work should be sent to each of the three committee members, either electronically or in hard copy. Additional nomination information must also be submitted using the QMMR award nomination form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politics of Marginalization and Inclusion Award <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This award draws attention to and elevates research that focuses on the historic and ongoing impacts of discrimination and exclusion, and struggles for inclusion, in society. This award is for an outstanding qualitative or multi-method publication that explicitly engages with and contributes to knowledge of the politics of marginalization and inclusion. Deadline for nominations: <\/strong>January 31, 2026. Qualitative Evidence Award <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This award is dedicated to amplifying the innovative conceptualization, generation, and use of data. The qualitative evidence award recognizes the value in exploring new questions in novel ways and older questions with fresh eyes. It incentivizes creativity and ambition in data generation while underscoring the methodological aspect of QMMR and the intellectual significance of qualitative and multi-method research. Deadline for nominations: <\/strong>January 31, 2026. Kendra Koivu Paper Award<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This award honors the scholarly legacy and contributions of Kendra Koivu, who published important works on process tracing, case selection, and other qualitative fields, and who provided valuable service to the section. This award is given to a paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association. Please note that to be eligible for consideration, the paper must be the version that was presented at the 2025 APSA annual meeting, not a subsequent iteration.  Deadline for nominations: <\/strong>January 31, 2026.
