Cynthia Weber Best Conference Paper Award

The section’s Best Conference Paper Award is named in honor of political scientist Cynthia Weber (Professor of International Relations, University of Sussex). The award recognizes the best paper exploring sexuality and politics presented at the previous year’s APSA Annual Meeting.

Kenneth Sherrill Best Dissertation Award

The section’s Best Dissertation Award is named in honor of political scientist Kenneth Sherrill (Professor Emeritus, Hunter College-CUNY). The award recognizes the best dissertation on sexuality and politics completed and successfully defended in the previous two calendar years. The award is open to all scholarship that falls under the broad rubric of sexuality and politics, including studies concerning the regulation of sexuality, political responses to the regulation of sexuality, the uses of sexuality as a political construct, the intersections of sexuality with gender, race, and class, or LGBT politics and mobilizations.

LGBTQ+ Politics Best Book Award

The LGBTQ+ Politics Best Book Award is given annually to a book published in the preceding calendar year that addresses LGBTQ+ politics, broadly defined. The committee welcomes books in any subfield of political science and using any appropriate methodology. 

We are currently seeking nominations for the first award to be given at the 2023 APSA Meeting in Los Angeles. Any book on LGBTQ+ politics, broadly defined, published in 2022 is eligible for consideration. The Committee welcomes nominations from any subfield of political science and using any methodological approach.

Authors should arrange to have a copy of their book sent to each of the three committee members at the addresses listed below. Books must be received by April 15th, 2023 to be considered. Any questions can be directed to the chair of the Book Award Committee Alison Gash at gash@uoregon.edu.

Sexuality & Politics Lasting Contribution Award

This award is given to recognize a paper, journal article, book, or body of work that has made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of sexuality and politics and the discipline of political science more broadly. To be considered for this award, the work nominated must be at least 10 years old. Any member of the Sexuality & Politics section can put forward a nomination for this award.
