General Paper & Panel Submission Options

Our two-day virtual event will provide a forum for scholars interested in sharing their research, providing constructive feedback for others, and creating partnerships and networks for future collaboration. This 100% digital event will also feature opportunities to learn from Research Group workshops, general panels, and a keynote panel around the theme of “Challenges in Political Science.”

General submissions for the 2024 Virtual Research Meeting are now closed.

For general panels & papers, submitters will be able to select up to three (3) keywords for their proposal. The program committee will review and create general panels out of the received proposals.

Sample Keywords:

  • 2024 Elections
  • African American Politics
  • Asian American Politics
  • Comparative Politics
  • Democracy and Democratization
  • Environmental Policy
  • Ethnic and Racial Politics
  • Gender Politics and Policy
  • Health Care Policy
  • Immigration Policy
  • International Relations
  • LGBTQ+ Politics
  • Mental Health
  • Political Behavior & Identity
  • Political Communication
  • Political Economy
  • Political Methodology
  • Political Parties and Organizations
  • Public Policy
  • …and more!

As the virtual format of this meeting allows for new ways of structuring these discussions, we strongly encourage you to contribute your innovative and unique panel ideas and formats to make our inaugural Virtual Research Meeting even more engaging and thought-provoking. Creative topics could incorporate pedagogy, teaching and learning, academic freedom, or AI in political science, while innovative panel formats may include a comparative panel on Trump’s trials featuring constitutional law scholars and comparativists, a 3-minute elevator pitch workshop for dissertations, and more.

If you have an idea for an alternative panel type or format that you would like to suggest, please email Lynanne Lowry.

Full Session Submission Options

This conference will feature 4 session types (see above for details on alternative session types):

Paper Panels (90 min):

These include both Full Paper Panels – a fully formed panel session submission with all panel details, including panelist names, paper titles, and abstracts – and Created Panels – panel sessions comprised of individually submitted papers compiled into one session. All paper panels can have a maximum of five (5) papers. Each paper panel requires 1 session chair and 1-2 discussants. All panelists must agree that they will participate if the panel is selected.

Roundtables (90 min):

A roundtable proposal is for a discussion format session. Roundtables facilitate participants to discuss and debate on a specific topic. You must submit a session title and all participant details. You may submit up to 10 participants, and all participants must agree that they will participate if the panel is selected.

Lightning Rounds (90 min):

This panel type follows PechaKucha style format, where each presenter has five minutes to present their paper and research, followed by five minutes of feedback or Q&A. The format features eight presenters, two discussants, and a chair. This session type is not only a chance to present research to your peers, but also an opportunity for scholars to develop and enhance research communication skills through a concise presentation.

Author(s) Meet Critics (90 mins):

Similar to the regular roundtables, but proposal submitters and division chairs are encouraged to think creatively about incorporating works in progress to be published on the roundtable. These sessions could begin with a 10 minute presentation of a single paper that presents the next logical step in the research agenda set forth in the book, followed by a panel of critics talking about the book and about the work in progress. We also encourage division chairs to consider having author panels for articles that have appeared in refereed journals in addition to books.

Individual Submission Options

This conference will feature 2 individual submission types:

Individual Papers:

Individual paper submissions by an author(s) that can be incorporated into any session type.

Research in Five (Lightning Rounds):

Scholars will present their research using five slides for five minutes. Following their presentation, each presenter will then have five minutes to receive feedback from discussants and hold a Q&A with the audience.
