TLC at APSA:  Political Science Education in an Age of Mis- and Disinformation

Saturday, September 2, 2023

Co-Chairs: Amy Cabrera Rasmussen (California State University, Long Beach) and Renée Van Vechten (University of Redlands)

As democratic norms have bent under strain and as citizens struggle to discern fact from fiction, the role that political scientists play in advancing civic and political education for all students has become more critical than ever. In addition, disparities in student learning and challenges to higher education brought about or exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic also demand innovative responses.

The sixth annual TLC at APSA, the teaching and learning conference-within-a-conference that is part of the APSA Annual Meeting, will take place Saturday, September 2 in Los Angeles, CA. You are invited to participate in the day-long program promoting scholarly reflection on the tools, strategies, and pedagogical approaches enabling political science educators to develop and promote inclusive forms of civic literacy and engagement.

Building on past TLC and TLC at APSA conferences that have platformed a diversity of ideas, experiences, institutional settings, and identities, this highly interactive forum summons scholarship that can address such shared concerns and empower educators with new perspectives and analyses.

We invite proposals for workshops and paper presentations in designated tracks that will explore these themes, including those that reflect upon the enduring and evolving roles and responsibilities of political scientists in an age of mis- and disinformation. Papers may be presented in one of four track working groups:

  •       Civic Literacy and Engagement in Contested Times
  •       Active Learning and High-Impact Practices
  •       Teaching Research, Writing, and Analytical Skills
  •       Promoting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

All TLC participants must be registered for the 2023 APSA Annual Meeting & Exhibition in order to attend the TLC at APSA.

Please contact teaching@apsanet.org if you have questions.

Thank you to the 2023 TLC at APSA Program committee for their hard work and dedication in planning this year’s TLC at APSA.
